Minecraft was created by Swedish game developer Markus Persson, better known as Notch, and released by Mojang in 2009. Minecraft slowly gained traction over the years. In 2011, a mobile version of the game, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, was created, and the game surpassed 1 million sales. In 2012, Minecraft was released on the Xbox 360, and in August 2013, Minecraft was playable on both Xbox and Playstation consoles. In 2014, Mojang, along with Minecraft, was bought by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Although Minecraft’s sales continued to climb, the popularity of Minecraft among the public fell from its peak in 2011 and 2012. Between 2013 and 2015, Minecraft only sold 10 million copies. How did this game which had fallen from grace manage to reclaim its spot as the best game ever?
After Minecraft’s golden age, the public turned on the game and the fans of Minecraft were known as nerds, and Minecraft was seen as “cringy.” The once-loyal fan base, that played the game faithfully for two years, began to move on to other game franchises with game entries in 2012, such as Borderlands 2, Far Cry 3, and The Simpsons: Tap Out. It seemed that the Minecraft craze had run its course, and Minecraft was forgotten. It would take a miracle for Minecraft to become relevant again, but God decided to take pity on the human race, and once again allow the public to roam around the world of Minecraft with their friends.
Around 2018, Minecraft really began its ascent through Instagram, with accounts creating memes and video edits using Minecraft. These memes, which were viewed by millions, reminded the public about the forgotten game. Slowly, content creators on YouTube caught on to this trend and began to make gaming videos on Minecraft. Plenty of content creators made videos on Minecraft, but the breakthrough was Pewdiepie, who has over 100 million subscribers, creating a series of Minecraft playthroughs. Along with this exposure, Minecraft has rolled out plenty of updates to the game, including bees and turtles added to the wildlife in the game world. Recently, Minecraft became the best selling game of all time, passing Tetris for the number one spot. Now, I hear kids in my English class talking about what they are going to do in Minecraft that night. Minecraft is considered one of the best games to play with friends. Personally, I do not own Minecraft, but my friends are constantly pestering me to get Minecraft so I can play with them on the weekends. The Minecraft fandom is truly alive and well.
Minecraft truly is an underdog story that competes with the likes of Rocky and Rocky II. A game that seemed to have run its course found its second breath and is now beloved across the world. Minecraft might just be immortal, and nobodies complaining.
